YOU CAN DO IT! In the 19th century, there was a craze for daredevil stunts. One of the greatest of the daredevils was the legendary Great Blondin, a French aerialist who crossed Niagara Falls on a tightrope in 1859. He performed eight more crossings over the next two summers to ever-increasing crowds. He bicycled across, cooked an omelet at midpoint in the journey, walked across on stilts, traveled blindfolded, and once even carried his manager on his back. He was often imitated but never surpassed. Amazingly, he died in bed at the age of 73. Daredevils are no longer the rage. Yet every day, ordinary human beings climb onto tightropes and embark on unsung, perilous journeys across uncharted territory. Unlike Blondin, who relished the fame and fortune his feats brought him, most women have this journey thrust upon them. Few choose to put themselves at risk. So many people depend on them! But things come into our lives, and we have to decide what to do. When the impossible journey beckons, a woman can lie down and give up, or step onto the tightrope and begin the crossing. Family and friends may cheer her on. Their love and support is crucial. Yet, like the great aerialist, every woman who steps out on a high wire is essentially alone.
